셀프메디케이션 시장은 건기식의 성장을 이끌고 있다. 식약처는 규제샌드박스에 이어 맞춤형 건기식 소분·판매의 제도화 방안을 찾고 있으며, 관련 법률 개정을 추진하고 있다. 법안에는 ‘맞춤형 건강기능식품 판매업’ 신설 및 ‘맞춤형 건강기능식품관리사’ 등을 도입하는 내용이 담겨 있다. 오유경 식약처장은 “소비자 안전 확보를 위해 제도적으로 보완해야 할 부분이 있는지 시범사업 전 과정을 꼼꼼히 살피겠다”며 “맞춤형 건기식이 소비자의 건기식 섭취·구매 편의성을 높이고 건기식 산업의 새로운 성장 동력이 되도록 법령 정비 등 필요한 지원을 아끼지 않을 것”이라고 밝혔다.
개인 맞춤형 영양제 분석과 구독 서비스를 넘어 커피머신으로 홈 카페를 만드는 것처럼, 집에서 영양제를 만들어먹는 것도 가능해질 것으로 보인다. 영양제 기계로 매일매일 다른 컨디션에 맞춘 영양제를 조합하는 것.
반대로 마그네슘을 별도로 챙겨 먹으면 도움이 되는 사람도 있다. 특히 골다공증 환자에겐 마그네슘이 유용하다. 마그네슘은 뼈 건강에 중요한 요소다. 마그네슘은 뼈 건강에 영향을 주는 비타민 D를 뼈로 운반하는 단백질과 결합하며, 비타민 D를 활성화하는 역할도 한다. 골다공증이 있는 경우, 마그네슘과 칼슘, 비타민 D를 함께 섭취하면 시너지 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

코로나19 이후 크게 성장한 건강기능식품(이하 건기식) 시장 규모는 2022년 기준 6조 1429억 원으로 추정된다. 2019년 대비 25% 넘게 성장한 규모다. 2021년 카카오톡 선물하기에서 건기식 구매는 전년 동기 대비 51% 늘었다.
특히 해당 제품은 치아사용이 어려운 영유아를 위한 액상타입으로 프랑스산 드롭퍼를 장착, 더욱 간편하고 위생적으로 제품 섭취가 가능하다.
영양제는 구약사회 총무이사인 최명수 약사가 지역사회 취약계층 지원 목적으로 사비를 들여 마련했다. 구약사회에 기탁해 관내 인보단체들에 골고루 전달할 수 있었다.

변화 과정은 힘들지만, 장기적 건강 상태 유지에 가장 중요한 ‘좋은 음식’
헬스케어 스타트업 모노랩스의 ‘아이엠’은 AI를 기반으로 개인의 건강 상태와 생활 습관 등을 분석해 맞춤형 건기식을 제공한다. 온라인에서는 20여 문항의 설문을 진행하면 맞춤형 건기식을 추천해준다. 전문 영양사와의 카카오톡 채팅 상담을 통해 그중에서 꼭 필요한 영양제를 고를 수 있다. 오프라인으로는 약국 등에 설치된 키오스크를 통해 설문 진행 후 약사와 상담할 수 있다. 추천받은 영양제를 구매하면 하루치씩 소분해 매달 정기 배송해준다. 또한 정해진 시간에 카카오톡 메시지 알림을 보내고 리워드를 지급하는 방식으로 섭취 관리도 돕는다.
함께 출시된 DS바이오 츄어블 비타민D 400IU는 스위스산 프리미엄 비타민 원료를 사용하며 튼튼한 뼈와 치아형성이 필요한 유·소아에게 필요한 제품이다. 비타민D3은 칼슘과 인의 흡수에 용이하고 뼈의 형성과 유지에 필요한 영양소로서 골다공증 발생위험 감소 및 유아 구루병 예방에 효과적이다.
사회와 팜스임상영양약학회는 지난 3월 10일 영도구청을 방문하여 지역 내 취약계층 어르신들을 위한 영양제 50세트(1,000만원 상당)를 이웃돕기 성품으로 기탁하였다.
또 비피도박테리움락티스 B94를 부원료로 담아 소아 과민성대장 증후군에도 효과적이다. 아울러 부원료 중 하나인 프락토올리고당과 바실러스 낫토 추출 해바라기유(비타민 K2)가 함유됐다.
사설 보호소의 경우에도 공간과 금전적 한계가 있어 후원자와 봉사자에 의지해 운영되는 시스템으로 각 유기동물을 섬세하게 돌보기는 어렵다. 특히 사료만으로 부족한 필수 영양소를 보충할 수 없는 등 개체별 지속적인 관찰 및 관리가 힘들어 보호소의 유기동물들은 다양한 질환에 노출될 수 밖에 없다. 치료시간이 길어지면 입양시기가 미뤄지게 되는 악순환이 반복된다.

지병이 있는 경우 주의해야 할 영양제가 있나요?
또한 철분과 칼슘은 동시에 복용하면 좋지 않습니다. 흡수되는 통로가 같기 때문에 경쟁적으로 작용을 하는 거죠. 우리 몸에서 칼슘이 더 잘 흡수되는 형태라 철분은 상대적으로 흡수가 덜 될 수 있습니다. 두 가지 영양제를 복용해야 한다면 적어도 6~7시간 차이를 두고 먹는 것을 권장합니다.

헬스케어 스타트업 알고케어는 IoT 영양관리 가전 ‘뉴트리션 엔진’을 통해 구현되는 실시간 영양관리 솔루션 ‘나스’(NaaS, Nutrition-as-a-Service)를 선보였다. 사용자가 그날의 몸 상태를 선택만 하면 기존에 저장된 건강 정보를 토대로 헬스케어 AI가 지름 4mm 알갱이 형태의 영양제들을 맞춤형으로 배합해 한 잔에 제공한다. AI에는 자체 연구시설의 의약사 연구진이 3년 간 개발한 초정밀 건강 알고리즘이 적용되어 있다. 알고케어는 국제전자제품박람회(CES)에서 2021년 ‘헬스&웰니스’부문, 2022년 ‘가정용 전자제품’ 부문, 2023 ‘가정용 전자제품’ 부문으로 3년 연속 혁신상을 수상했다.
김선영 교수: 현재 유산균 종류에 따른 효과가 명확히 밝혀지진 않았습니다. 유산균의 효과는 사람마다 다른 만큼 맹신할 수 없습니다.
영양제는 면역력 향상, 간 기능 개선, 피로회복 등 다양한 효과를 얻을 수 있어 많은 현대인에게 사랑을 받고 있다. 하지만, 아무리 좋은 영양제라도 과다 섭취하면 독이 될 수 있다는 점을 기억해야 한다. 과다 복용에 주의해야 할 대표적인 성분 6가지와 각 성분의 권장섭취량을 보건복지부의 ‘2020 영양소 섭취기준’을 토대로 살펴본다.

개인에게 맞춤형 건기식을 추천하는 서비스들이 속속 나오는가 하면, 추천을 바탕으로 영양제를 구독할 수 있는 서비스도 인기를 끌고 있다. 앱을 통해 개인 맞춤형 분석은 물론 상담, 관리 방법 등 스스로 관리하며 영양제를 먹을 수 있도록 돕는 기능이 함께 제공된다. 구독 서비스는 한 달분이나, 하루분씩 소분해 복용 편리성을 높인 것이 특징이다.
보윙은 음성인식을 활용한 리워드 광고 어플리케이션으로, 지난 2월 13일부터 27일까지 2주간 ‘보윙 유기동물 후원 이벤트’를 개최했으며, 반려동물 건강기능 전문 브랜드인 스테이웰과 함께 이번 후원 이벤트를 통해 스테이웰 멀티비타민&미네랄 영양제를 포함하여 약 천만원 상당의 물품을 유기견과 유기묘에게 후원했다.
투비콘의 개인 맞춤 영양제 구독 서비스 ‘필그램’은 국민건강보험공단의 건강검진 결과와 복용 중인 약 정보를 취합해 영양제를 추천한다. 국내 10개 생명보험사가 사용하는 지능형 언더라이팅 ‘H-health’ 엔진을 기반으로 하는 알고리즘을 적용했다. 필그램이 보유한 약품·건기식 관련 데이터는 2만 200개 이상이다. 알고리즘을 바탕으로 AI가 주의해야 할 성분과 추천 영양 성분을 고려해 정보를 제공한다. 각 영양제별로 복용 시기와 권장량을 안내하며, 영양상담사와 화상으로 상담을 진행한다. 또한 한 영양소당 여러 제조사의 제품을 준비해 선택의 폭을 넓혔다. 앱을 통해 설문을 거치면 정기 배송을 통해 하루에 먹을 영양제를 모아 하루분씩 소분한 제품을 받을 수 있다.
먼저 DS바이오 이지드롭은 세계 3대 유산균 제조회사의 원료를 사용한 영유아 유산균으로 습진 및 아토피 완화에 도움을 줄 수 있는 락토바실러스 람노서스 HN001을 담았다.
한국암웨이는 개인 맞춤형 건기식 소분 판매 서비스 ‘마이팩’을 선보였다. PMAS(분변으로 장 환경을 재현하는 복제 장 기술)로 개인별로 유익한 미생물 등을 분석해 프로바이오틱스 6종 중 적합한 제품을 추천하는 서비스도 운영하고 있다.

엠에스엠 등 건강 개선에 도움 되는 성분은 어떨까? 이 성분들은 대개 영양제로 먹으면 사람이 가진 생리적 회복 능력을 강화해 건강회복을 돕는다. 적정 시점에 잘 먹으면 건강 유지에 도움을 줄 수 있지만 나쁜 식습관이나 생활 습관이 계속된다면 영양제도 한계를 드러낸다. 이럴 때 사람들이 찾는 게 바로 좋은 음식이다.

좋은 음식을 먹을 결심을 하자마자 벽을 만난다. 우선, 뭘 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠다. 두 번째는 평생 내가 가져온 입맛을 바꾸는 게 너무 어렵다. 결국 이런저런 걱정에 망설이다 더 쉬운 방법은 없는지 주변을 탐색하다 변화에 실패한다. 여기까지 과정은 약국에서 상담하면서 참 많이 만났던 환자들의 건강 관리 패턴이자 내가 막혔던 부분이다.

마그네슘은 불면증이 있거나 스트레스로 인한 두통이 있는 사람에게도 유용하다. 마그네슘은 세로토닌과 도파민 합성에 관여해 기분 개선 효과를 기대할 수 있고, 근육을 이완해 혈압 강하와 안정을 찾는 데도 도움을 준다. 그래서 불면증 환자나 스트레스성 두통 환자의 보조 요법으로 사용할 수 있다. 생리 전 증후군(PMS)이 심한 사람의 경우, 마그네슘의 기분 개선 효과와 근육 경련을 막는 효과의 도움을 받아 생리 전 증후군 완화 효과를 기대할 수 있다.
김선영 교수: 비타민A를 복용할 때 주의가 필요해요. 두통, 피곤, 식욕저하, 어지럼증, 피부 건조, 간 손상, 출혈 등을 일으킬 수 있기 때문입니다. 임산부에겐 금기이고, 알코올 중독자라면 간 손상을 키울 수 있습니다.

장동석 약사: 전문가 상담을 권합니다. 특히 고혈압, 당뇨 등 만성질환이 있는 분들은 주의가 필요합니다. 너무 많이 복용하는 것보단 적당히 맞춰 복용하는 것이 중요하고요. 영양제는 건강한 식생활과 운동의 보조적 수단이기 때문에 맹신하지 않는 것이 좋겠습니다.
